This is an exploratory course designed to introduce students to basic tasks and tools that are common in the construction trades. The course is open to all students grades 9-12. The course is designed to expose students to and allow them to experience entry-level responsibilities in construction operation, safety, woodworking and general carpentry. Subjects to be covered include (but not limited to) wood/carpentry, shop safety, hand tools, power tools, measuring/measurements, and various building materials. This is a creative, hands on class that involves building projects. General math skills, which include using fractions, decimals, and measurements, will be reviewed and practiced in a way that is useful in a construction environment. Career opportunities within the construction trade are revealed through the use of video, and guest speakers.

This course builds on the concepts of building materials, components, methods, and sequences in residential and commercial construction. The focus of this course will be masonry and reinforced concrete construction. This class is designed to give students basic, entry-level skills in construction and related trades and an overview of available career opportunities. This is a creative, hands-on class that involves building projects. Emphasis is placed on safety and the proper use of both hand and power tools.

10-12th grade      Prerequisite: Construction Technology II with a C or better

This intermediate course is designed to allow students to design and build live projects for customers, schools, and the community, as well as introduce students to other subcontracted aspects of construction, such as concrete work, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and roofing. Construction Technology III students will become members of the esteemed PHS construction crew, learn job site roles, and collaborate to build a variety of projects such as a Tiny House. All projects will be built to proper code and to plan. Also included will be maintenance and repair (as needed) of shop equipment and power tools.

This advanced course expands on the principles covered in previous classes. Construction Technology IV students will become members of the esteemed PHS Construction Crew, learn job site roles, and collaborate to build a variety of projects such as a Tiny House. Other topics include electrical, plumbing, and construction management. Along with building trades, students will be exposed to design and CNC woodworking operations, with the opportunity to create fine woodworking projects. Since the Construction program prepares students for the job market, level 4 students will be asked to maintain a job readiness portfolio, create a resume, and be encouraged to seek part-time employment in the construction field.

11-12th grade      Prerequisite: Construction Technology IV with a C or better

Students in this class will explore, plan, prepare a cost estimate, and construct a project or multiple projects for themselves or community customers. Students must be able to work independently.
